Alongside the continued growth within residential developments, 2025 and 2026 have seen the delivery of almost 2km of new pedestrian and cycle routes, primarily designed to support safe and sustainable journeys to Great Park Academy. These new links provide families with improved opportunities to walk, wheel and cycle to school while helping to reduce traffic congestion around key routes.
As these routes become increasingly well used, we would like to remind all residents and visitors of the importance of considerate parking and responsible driving. Parking on roads, pavements, cycleways and junctions around all our schools creates significant safety risks for children, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users, as well as obstruct visibility and access. Parents and carers are therefore strongly encouraged to make use of the dedicated drop-off and pick-up facility within the Park and Ride site wherever possible. This provides a safe and family-friendly option, helping children enjoy a short walk or cycle to school while reducing traffic pressures in surrounding residential areas.
To further enhance safety along these important active travel routes, parking on sections of the northern end of the route will be actively discouraged. Keeping these areas clear will help ensure that pedestrians, cyclists and school children can travel safely and comfortably, allowing the new infrastructure to deliver its full benefit to the community. By working together and parking considerately, residents can play an important role in creating a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone.
Remedial works to kerbs and the completion of tarmacking to a further c.2km of cycleways within the public open space around the Ouseburn are scheduled to continue through to the end of 2026. Due to fish spawning season restrictions within the Ouseburn, planned bridge improvement works have been postponed and are now expected to take place during spring/summer 2027.
